Nice player, possible warranty issues August 25, 2009 B. Altman (Baltimore, MD) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
We have 3 Dane-Elec Meizu units (SP versions). Two are the 2Gb version and one is the 4Gb version.
The Good:
Nice video with good sound. Lasts around 3 hours. Kids love it - we bought it for a 2 day road trip and it was a great success.
The Bad:
Converting a file for the player can be a hassle and has varying results. 1. It may work perfectly first time. 2. It might freeze when it starts to play (this seems to be a problem with the first frame only as when you fast forward it past the beginning before it starts playing it continues fine) 3. It freezes the unit without any fix. 4. It plays but resets when you try to forward the video so you have to watch it from beginning to end without touching anything. In general I have managed to get around these problems by using freeware conversion tools and converting to wmv and then to avi and then to the format for the player for those video files giving me trouble. With the exception of 1 video this has worked. That one video has had me spend plenty of time converting without getting around the problem (problem number 4 listed above).
There are procedures you can find on the net for what to do if your player turns in to a brick (something that happened to our 4Gb meizu player and has not yet been fixed) but it is also all a hassle with no guaranteed results.
Updating the firmware is a hassle.
The Ugly:
If something happens to your unit forcing you to rely on the warranty, do not expect Dane-Elec Meizu to honor it. Check the BBB under "Dane-Elec" for details. For our 4Gb unit which we could not return to [...] since it was past 30 days after buying, I emailed and called Dane-Elec without any results. They do not respond - but I expected this after researching the warranty issue on the web already. I am happy with the working units though, but having zero warranty would be a deal killer for me had I known of the problem in advance.
UPDATE (Sep 16, 2009): After filing a report with the BBB and the Attorney General of their region, I received a call from Dane-Elec about a week later. I followed their directions in sending in the player and received a new one today.
1st ipod killer February 10, 2009 dreydnero 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
3½ yrs ago a coworker sold me the 2Gb version directly from his china vacation with accessories for $150. 2 yrs ago, same guy sold me the 8Gb for $220....GREAT device.
pros: many
cons:
1-dont know if its the age or what, but the thing gets stuck from track to track (VERY annoying when i plug into speakers at home & play LOUD).
2- "updates music library" whenever disconnected from pc or usb
3-battery life could be better
OVERALL: MY NEXT PHONE &/OR MP3/MP4 WILL BE A MEIZU

More like 3.5 stars...It has its quirks... February 9, 2009 Feelah the tigress 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Well, where to start? This is my very first MP3 player, and it has both its pros and cons. While it is great in some ways, some other things are absolutely annoying. I think I'll just list the pros/cons.
Pros:
1. I really like the bright, large screen. Also, the unit itself looks and feels like a high-quality item, and it is small enough to comfortably fit in a pocket.
2. The sound quality is great once you fool around with the spacializer settings.
3. It recognizes various file types for music, including the standard MP3. Part of the reason I chose the meizu was to get away from the Ipod's use of the M4A files (I mean, come on, who else uses those?!)
4. It has lots of little customization details, such as changing the font color. Also, you can use any picture you want for the background (just like a computer wallpaper). I really enjoyed changing around the background pic.
5. You can drag and drop music files into the meizu folder once it's connected to the computer--no special software needed! Also, it connects with a standard USB cable (the kind with one small plug and a normal size plug at the other end). This means that it's easy to replace the cable if you lose it.
6. You can get song lyrics to display onscreen (good luck getting this to work though).
Cons:
1. Making playlists is a pain in the @$$! I have to go through seven steps just to make a playlist, put it on the meizu, then rename it a decent name. For example, first you have to make a folder on your desktop and fill it with your music, then you have to put that folder in the music section in the meizu folder. Then you have to put those exact same files in the music folder outside the playlist folder (so basically, it's in there twice). Then you have to disconnect the meizu, go under browser and select the folder, then select playlist. The meizu will name it playlist 1 (regardless of the name you put on the folder). Then you have to reconnect the meizu to the computer, copy the playlist 1 (in the playlist section of the meizu folder), paste it back in, rename the copy to whatever name you actually wanted, and delete the original. Sigh, you get the picture now. Alternatively, you can make playlists directly from the meizu by highlighting and selecting each song--one by one. Either way, it's tedious. AND, if you want to add, delete, or rearrange songs in the playlist, you have to do all the steps again, just like you were making a brand new playlist!
2. Another problem is that there is significant lag when you select a playlist to listen to. Once you hit enter, it takes about 30 seconds or more to actually start playing the songs.
3. Another thing that really irritates me is every time you disconnect it from the computer, it'll start loading/verifying every single song on it. This can take anywhere from 1-5 minutes. I don't even know why it must do this or if it's even necessary.
4. One other thing, the meizu organizes songs so that if you try to navigate by artist, you must select a specific album before you can play the song. You cannot just play all the songs by a particular artist. This is extremely annoying if you happen to have a bunch of songs by an artist but each song is off a different album of theirs. For example, you select "artist X", they have 10 albums listed, then you must select an album, which brings up the songs in that album. Suppose I have just one song each per album in my meizu. Then, I'd have to play one song, then it would end, then I'd have to go back through the menu and select the next album to play the next song, and so on. The only way to get around this is to either listen to a single album in it's entirety or to make a playlist out of your various favorite songs by that artist. Well, you've already heard about what it's like to make a playlist...
Overall, it may seem as though the meizu has crippling flaws, and it does, for the most part. However, I still like my little meizu, as it still has those good points I mentioned. Really though, I wish making playlists was a bit easier. If that were fixed, the meizu would be awesome! As it is though, since I've really not tried any other devices, I couldn't tell you how they compare. I just hope this review helps potential buyers know exactly what they are getting into.
A pretty good media device with a few glitches January 16, 2009 Prasad K. Cherian I do a decent amount of plane and car travel throughout the year. I already had a an Archos 5100 (which I loved) but it could be pretty bulky to travel with although the 100 gb HD space was great. I wanted something that I could listen to music with or watch a movie or two without having to bring alot of other stuff. I was resigned that this would mean that I would have to get an iPod - something I have thus far been sucessful in avoiding. Luckily I found out about this little device first which my sister ended up getting for me for my birthday.
Granted the device itself does not have the most orginal of designs, but honestly how many ways can you pair a hard drive with a screen that would be "orginal." The screen itself is about 2.5 inches with a navigation control on the right. At 8 gbs of space, it can actually fit a decent amount of video and a great deal of songs. Video quality is crisp if a bit choppy at times and the sound is excellent. There is no speaker function, but if you pair this device with a good pair of headphones you are good to go.
The box comes with the device, a wrist strap, a small pleather like case, a pair of head phones (which I have never used), a usb cable, and a CD-ROM with video conversion software. The device can charge with an adapter or if you connect it to your computer with the provided USB cable. Charge times are pretty quick. I don't have any music on my device as I mainly use it for watching movies - but I have gotten towards six hours of video use on this (they rate it at about 4).
Getting media on the device is as easy as drag and drop - just be sure that you place your media in the correct folder (video goes into the "VIDEO" folder for example).
The format that the Meizu uses is AVI, but with a small twist. Because of the orientation of the screen, each video has to be rotated clockwise 90 degrees (or counter clockwise 270 degrees). Be warned you HAVE TO DO THIS in order to see video on the Meizu otherwise it will not work. More accurately, the Meizu will freeze requiring you to wait for the battery to die before you can fix anything.
I found the in box conversion software to be pretty lacking. It will only work with one particular video format and I was never able to figure out which one that was - well that and I lost interest. I got around this problem by checking out the forums on Meizu's english home page and another great sight called anything but ipod . com. It was on this latter forum that I found a link to download a program called iriverter - which is free. When this is combined with a the meizu.profile file (also available in the forums), converting video is pretty painless - somewhat time consuming though. There is another program on the web called virtual dub 2 which has more options but is much more tedious to use. Because the screen size is so small (240x320), converted videos tend to not take up as much space as the source - in many cases less than half the space of the original.
The Meizu has other functions as well: radio, voice recorder, picture viewer etc. These are pretty good, but not functions that I am that concerned with.
While I think overall this is a good player, there are some problems with it:
1. Navigation User Interface is a cross shaped button that is touch sensitive - not unlike Apple's click wheel. While this does work well, I find that sometimes no matter how careful I am once I choose an option, the slightest touch will scroll away from that choice and select something else. Although I hate iPod, I have to admit they did do the click wheel thing pretty well. While frustrating sometimes, I found that using my index finger instead of my thumb helped this problem out alot.
2. Video length - a number of reviews have said that the Meizu will not play a video longer than 2 hours. While I have not found this to be true, I did notice that fast forwarding video when they are longer than 1.5 hours will cause the screen to freeze and eventually change to the next video.
3. Freezing - this is an intermittent problem - hardly happens to me but it does require you to have to wait for the battery to die before you can fix any problems when it does happen.
4. Customer support - I have not had to use this, but I have not heard good things. I have had this for a little more than a year, no irreversible problems that I could not fix myself - yet.
5. This may not be the best choice for those looking for ease of use. Although you get things on it by dragging and dropping, videos require converting and even then you may have to tweak some settings to get the desired result. While this was nowhere near as annoying as this could be with the earlier generation Archos PVPs it should be noted.
6. Not sure about Macintosh support - but since I don't use/like Macs, this really isn't a "disadvantage" specifically. At least not for me.
All in all I really like this player and have been quite happy with it. I am interested to see what else this company is planning in the future. One last piece of advice, Meizu's website offers a sturdy plastic case which protects the whole device, not just the screen. I would greatly suggest getting this as it also comes with an arm strap and little stand which prop up the device - reasonably priced too.
Meizu July 26, 2008 Jeanette Hernandez (Houston, Tx USA) Though it broke once when I got it, it's awesome.
It has the best features, but the games and stopwatch, etc are pretty useless. The Meizu is easy to use and the control are unique and sensitive, so it'll take some time to get used to.
